The oldest known cave painting is a red hand stencil in Maltravieso cave, Cáceres, Spain. This centre is part of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, Historic Heritage and Museums of the town council of Grand Canary. It is of note that some of the main artificial cave sites of the island are located in the relative vicinity of the Painted cave (cuevas del Hospital, Huertas del Rey or the Audience cave in the Four Doors cave site). Ochre is not an organic material, so carbon dating of these pictures is often impossible. In 1970 the General commission of archaeological excavations ("Comisaría General de Excavaciones Arqueológicas") started working on the protection of the cave, notably on the humidity that was causing much damage. The Volunteer Fire Department operates so-called brush trucks for rapid response along the ridge line, as well as a larger pumper. It seems that all metal items were imported.
